Blooming Medusa, 2022
Plastic, thread, light, cord
Blooming Medusa hovers between the world of sea creatures and mythological messengers, evoking a dreamlike presence. Suspended sewn threads weave and unravel, binding and releasing simultaneously, suggesting both unity and impermanence. These lights appear as if from nowhere, glowing softly in the dark, sharing interconnected stories that bridge and connect us.
Inspired by the natural luminescence of marine life, particularly the bioluminescent glow of jellyfish, this installation mimics the subtle exchanges of coded communication. Each illuminated form pulses in quiet conversation with its neighbors, creating a visual language that draws viewers into an intimate experience with their environment.
First displayed in a bar in Columbus, Ohio, Blooming Medusa became a living part of the space, responding to the rhythm of people there celebrating and moving around it. The lights and their hanging tendrils took on a new life as they became part of a communal gathering, encouraging a space for connection, curiosity, and shared experience.
